Proston is a well-serviced small country town which prides itself on friendliness and community spirit, and was the winner of the 1999 Ergon Energy, Tidy Towns' 'Bush Spirit Award'. The economy of the region is primarily drawn from pastoral agricultural and other rural activities e.g. Duboisia, piggeries, forestry, cropping and cattle grazing.
Local events in the area include the Yellow-Belly Fishing Competition at Lake Boondooma, the Proston Show, the Golden Spurs Campdraft and the Bush Balladeers Concert at Boondooma Homestead.
Proston has town water; ambulance station with resident ambulance officer; police station with resident police officer; rural fire brigade; outpatients clinic 5-days a week with permanent community nurse and visiting doctors on Tuesdays and Thursdays; rubbish collection
in the town and Proston Gardens every Friday; a small country state school grades prep to grade 10, with dedicated staff and active P&C; vibrant Playgroup; new community hall; showgrounds; swimming pool; well-stocked library and a rubbish tip.
